Wallpaper? Who needs it!

This week, Rhonda Canales and I teamed together to solve a problem our client had with wallpaper they had started to install...the batches were discolored on the edges. Since the design had also been discontinued their designer, Tamara Rosenbloom, asked us to replicate it in paint. Here are the results:

The artisan members of MAE are known throughout the region for crafting outstanding custom furnishings and architectural elements. Each year they get together to showcase their lighter, more portable creations - original, affordable and perfect for holiday gifting (or keeping!). This year they have invited a few friends to join in the fun:

Artist-Designer-Creative Prolific Scott Neste presents original mixed medium artworks
Jennevieve Schlemmer is leaving her mosaics at home and bringing a menagerie of felted creations

And for something completely different we are proud to be presenting Urban Elixir - the cure for the common cocktail. U.E. is a new, woman-owned Tacoma business venture creating artisan-made cocktail mixers. Their mission statement is to create exceptional, hand-crafted cocktail mixers and encourage giving back to our world in meaningful ways. They will be unveiling (and sampling!) 3 mixers at our event: Margarita, Bloody Mary and Potion #3.

If you cannot make the Gala opening on Saturday 11/19, we will be hosting a sneak peek during ArtWalk Thursday 11/17 5-8pm and the show will run through December 21.

Recently completed furniture

A collaboration between award winning designer, Scott Neste of Minor Details Design, Madera Woodworking, Wade Martin of Axis Cut Parts and myself. The cabinet was designed by Scott Neste, meticulously built by Madera Woodworking, the door's curved elements by Wade Martin and I added the painted finish. I love Scott's inclusion of the beautiful mirror within his design!

In late March I finished this mural at the Ikonos Real Greek Souvlaki restaurant in Gig Harbor, WA. Working between 8 PM until 4 AM, I completed it in two weeks. Great client, Dan Walker, great designer, Cheryl Marshall and great restaurant staff!

A couple of weekends ago I was lucky enough to be involved in a fun "72 Hour Film Festival" mini movie filmed by David Derickson. It was a BLAST and the film won an award, Best Use of Prop!!!!!!! The prop= an egg.

What is the 72 Hour Film Festival?

Each filmmakers' challenge began Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Grand Cinema. 30 filmmaker teams gathered for the instructions on what needs to be in their 5 minute short film. It's simple - they have 72 hours to write, shoot and edit a unique and creative short film that includes these specific elements:

A character must have a SUPER POWER
Line of dialogue: "What are you going to do about it?"
Prop: an egg
Location: a dock or pier
5 minute maximum length, including credits

The films were due back at the Grand on Sunday, April 24th.

Finally, everyone was invited to watch these great local films at the Festival Party on Friday, May 6. The evening concluded with the annual awards ceremony, to recognize the best use of the different criteria, for a total of six (6) awards.

Where does creativity come from? What gets artists started on an idea? ArtsWest Gallery explores that enigmatic creative spark with artists Martha Brouwer, Dr. Mark Morgan, Mindy Barker, and Anita West in the exhibition Inexplicable Allusions running July 27 through August 21. The four artists featured in this exhibition lend answers to these questions by letting go of all preconceptions to create clever, quirky, sometimes surreal, but always delightful imagery.

Photographer and digital wizard Dr. Mark Morgan collects all the moments of his life to build his surreal digital montages. Morgan draws on inspiration ranging from a stray remark from a stranger on the street to a particularly moving song lyric. He can spend months at a time on a single image to build these wonderful, conceptual artworks. Morgan’s digitally collaged pieces include his photographs, watercolors, and graphic textures for layered ideas and images.

Mindy Barker draws outside the lines in her series “Mixed-Up Media.” Beginning from a photograph, Barker creates unique worlds of allusions using ink and acrylic paint. For example, a simple snapshot of a dog transforms into a colorful roller-skating worm with a prehensile tail and the words “SLURP,” “BLINK” and “YES” playfully intertwined within the piece. Barker studied art at Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Copenhagen.

Alive with creative spark, Anita West is an artist as well as an educator for an all-girls school in Kuwait. Reminiscent of Seurat’s Pointillism, West’s images of wobbly kneed camels, cats, and goats contain intricate designs from Persian culture. Her contrast of black ink on white paper suggests the stark desert landscape which can also allude to the cultural restraints throughout the region. Her art ultimately represents a wonderful flight of her imagination.

Martha Brouwer is a multi-award winning artist holding a Master’s degree from Harvard University. Utilizing intricate surface texture and technique, Brouwer’s inspiring works convey a delicate and nurturing display of human life intertwined with the animal world. Her imagery celebrates the interconnectedness of all life and its’ interdependent mysteries.

What is MAE?

Madera Architectural Elements (MAE) is a collective of Pacific Northwest artisans all of whom design and fabricate exceptional building components and furnishings. Members include: Ixia Tile – custom ceramic tile, Shape 3 – custom metal and artwork, Mindy Barker – mural and painter, Pacific Rim Tapestries – contemporary tapestry, Turner Furniture and Upholstery – upholstered furniture, Lynn DiNino – concrete and mixed media artist, Burnett Forge – artist blacksmith, Jennevieve Schlemmer - architectural mosaics, Steve Lawler – reFurniture, Diane Roberts - fused/stained glass, Christopher Hoppin - mixed media artist, Northwest Refinishing - wood refinishing, and Madera Fine Decorative Furnishings – furniture and cabinetry, Two Ravens Studio- metal casting, Design Tech Artglass- glass. Future participants will also include a custom blown glass sink and lighting fabricator and cabinet refinishing.
“What we’re creating is one-stop-shopping location for all of your architectural element needs,” said Madera owner Carlos Taylor-Swanson. “Whether you’re a homeowner or designer you’ll be able to visit our showroom and see what is new and exciting in contemporary furnishings and artisan-made building components,” he added.
The showroom, located in downtown Tacoma, will be open to the public Monday through Friday and by appointment. Each artisan-member will also use the showroom as a meeting place for clients.

PLAN AHEAD: DON'T LOOK AND ACCESS DENIED ART SHOWS WILL BE WORTH A PEEK>>>

"Is ... Is that a peephole?" you whisper under your breath, halting your walking tour of Tacoma. You look left, then right. It definitely looks like a peephole.

Supporting your body weight with your hand you peer through the hole, drilled into a building along Puyallup Avenue. Your eyes adjust. You believe you're gazing at ... yes, it's some sort of boudoir. Yes, most certainly - with carefully posed shadows and selectively chosen props occupying a brightly illuminated but shallow space surrounded by mood lighting. The tightly staged vignette in a single scene suggesting a certain narrative and thematic possibility, but resists being reduced to one storyline.

You pull away from the peephole. Then lean back into it. You repeat several times. "This is bizarre," you think to yourself.

A bit dizzy, you carefully continue down the sidewalk only to stop again a few feet later when your eye catches a space full of... what? Seriously? chastity belts!?! This is getting ridiculous.

"Good lord," you say to no one in particular. "What is going down in my city?"

And then you remember reading this post. Ah, yes. The Madera Architectural Elements artists are behind the boudoir vignettes, combing their artisan interior and exterior building skills into single scenes as part of the Don't Look group show. And the chastity belts are actually another round of the Denied art shows at Mineral gallery, with new artists - the original of which drew rave reviews last summer as Entrance Denied at the same gallery.

You turn the corner onto Pacific Avenue and head north, processing what you've seen. You've peeped into ladies dressing rooms. You've ogled ladies underwear. On an unrelated note, you also saw a young couple making out at the Sound Transit stop across the srteet.

Then you come to a halt - having reached some sort of epiphanic conclusion over what you have witnessed. And an opportunity has presented itself. You slowly spell out your thoughts for all to see in Tollefson Plaza.

Quiet Shoes, the movie

Quiet Shoes is a classic noir set in an unidentified time and place. Rick Savage, a down and out private dick, struggles to piece together his latest case, all the while nursing an obsessive gambling habit. Hot on his tail are two threatening thugs out to collect his massive debt. He has just purchased an intriguing new pair of shoes; shoes that will take him down a path littered with mysterious strangers, dead end leads, the sound of gunfire and the stench of something very very fishy. The bodies are starting to pile up. Can Savage solve this case before the next one on the pile is his!?....he'd better, he still has overdue library books to return and the fines are outrageous!

Painkillers podcast

Last Sunday, March 15th, the Painkillers were interviewed on the Northwest Convergence Zone!

With a few hours left of recording our last two songs at Uptone Studios for our next album, James, Billie, Drew, Rick, Ava, Hunter Lea (he plays amazing mellotron tracks, yes...mellotron, on one song and was with us for these last two days of recording...a youngin' with buckets of music making knowledge, known as part of Mono in VCF), and myself headed over to the NW Convergence Zone studio.

Big D, Big Joe, Double D, Wonderboy, Squeeze welcomed us warmly and made us feel comfortable right away. As you can hear on the podcast (link below) great time was had by all. These podcasters are all about the south sound and promote what's going on around here. A real asset to this area!!!

AND, as a real tantalizing tickler, Girl Trouble finished an interview just hours before us, so we share this podcast link with our good buddies!!! How did we get so lucky?!!!!

A girl's mural

A mural I recently finished for a sweet little girl. She liked lots of pink, so pink she got! Along with the many flowers and distant landscape I also painted little fairies among the foliage and butterflies here and there to tie in with the room's window treatments (butterfly print).

This room shares a bathroom with another bedroom. Rooms I also painted. This shot shows how the three rooms work with each other.

Here are some recently finished decorative projects:

A young girl's bathroom and bedroom. Both rooms have the same butterfly fabric which was used as the design jumping off point. In the bathroom (above) I painted butterflies around the room and in the bedroom I painted faux fabric around the crown with faux ribbons holding it up here and there (below).

This young boy's room features stripes of different widths and incorporates a tree I had painted years ago when the room had a much younger theme.

Greenwood, Barker show new works at Handforth Gallery

CUT PIECE. Artist Deborah Greenwood’s collage-based artist books and revamped postcards make up half of the exhibit currently up at Handforth Galley through Nov. 28.

The Tacoma Public Library’s main branch has a dual mixed media exhibit up now in its Handforth Gallery. Artists Deborah Greenwood and Mindy Barker are showing an array of unique handmade works highlighting each woman’s unique skills and careful eye.

Barker’s half of the exhibition is entitled “ReMix,” and Barker explains the purpose of her pieces in her artist statement.

“For those with minimal space but a gigantic need for art. Signed and numbered, each ‘ReMix’ is an individually hand-painted canvas or paper-covered compact disc.”

Taking utilitarianism to a whole new level, Barker takes an object that is present in almost every American household these days – compact discs – intersperses them with vinyl records and covers them in paint to form figures that appear to look like bones, veins, sinews, joints, letters, dolls and discolorations/exaggerations of all of them. She utilizes a strong palette of bold pinks, reds, blues, greens, yellows and blacks to highlight the images and also form words such as “razmataz,” “flea,” “state,” and “brim,” which leave the viewer with no idea what the artist is referring to.

Barker utilizes impressive shading techniques and makes interesting connections with her work that comes off as street art graffiti meets the human anatomy for inspiration and integration.

One of the most notable posed collections of “ReMix” is off to the left side of the gallery and hangs with Dolly Parton lyrics: “The way I see it if you want the rainbow you have to put up with the rain.” Each disc is situated in a way so that the lyrics read together and the bottom two discs read the musician’s first and last names.

Greenwood’s contribution to the show is in the form of artists’ books, which utilize photography, found objects, old books and collage to create unique works of art out of pieces that are more suitable on a pedestal than on a wall.

According to Greenwood’s artist statement, part of the appeal of using mixed media is that it is not nearly as dependable as traditional materials.

“The inspiration came from Roland Barthes’ book ‘Camera Lucida.’ He believes that some photographs by their nature are close to ‘haiku.’ It is by experiencing them over time that they reveal themselves with amusement or shock. I enjoy working with media that are not always predictable as they play on chance combinations and a feeling of the unexpected.”

Pedestals covered in Plexiglas fill up the center of the room at Handforth Gallery. Greenwood placed between three and four pieces together to exhibit in each, with no obvious theme bringing them together.

“Magic” and “Time Lady” are two recreated postcards that share space in the exhibit. The top of “Magic” has “Post Card” adorning it, and has varying shades of paper glued and pieced together revealing a young girl in an unusual coat, dress and shoes and the word “magic” is written overhead. Purple curtains make up the rest of the unique, almost circus sideshow character view. Real writing from aged postcards lines the edges of the piece like a frame.

In “Time Lady,” a woman’s hand is shown pouring a bottle of liquid into a flowing waterfall. The waterfall appears to be from an original postcard, but the hand and bottle were drawn onto the piece. Trees are lush in the background, writing from a past letter lines the piece vertically, and the edges of the piece seem faded, again giving away hints at its age.

The combination of mixed media, brightly adorned, modern pieces such as Barker’s, along with Greenwood’s lush, semi-surrealist artist books and postcards, make a worthy combination for viewing by anyone interested in seeing art that breaks the paint-on-canvas tradition.

Greenwood and Barker’s art is currently on display at Handforth Gallery inside of the main branch of the Tacoma Public Library through Nov. 28. The library is located at 1102 Tacoma Ave. S. and is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Music and Art in Wright's Park

Tomorrow, the 15th, all the festivities begin. Things start movin' at noon and the Painkillers (with myself and Ava King) will be on stage soon after.

But the best bet is to come and check out the sounds from the beginning since I know it starts with a sparkle. Tallest Tree (otherwise known as the not so distant past's Aviso) will start the day out right. Can't wait to see them. One of the guys, Geoff, used to play drums in a band with Drew called Committee for Public Safety...he is the best.

Am so excited for the doings of Girl Trouble and the Plastards too. Never a let down.

This should be a great show. Am excited to see the MakeUp Monsters...own one of their cds and have heard such great reviews of their live doings. AND the Painkillers will be the opening band. I recently showed a client a fold out book I've been working on and it spurred a great idea for her husband's Father's Day present. Since the book is one of "photo extensions", where photos I have shot are applied to a surface then continued past the photo's edges until you can not see the original image instantly, she sent me images of her little boy for her own custom book. There was one for every month of his first year, with 4 for the 12th month. So 15 images. This was a great project because she wanted me to be free with my "extension" ideas. Of course, I had to follow what was in the original photo, and usually I am able to pick a photo out of many (I see which photo has the best color or something in it to "extend"), so the pictures were a bit dark but I'm happy with the end product. My fantastic client was very happy too.

Last January I was asked to paint live while 4 other musicians performed in the round...one musician then the next, then the next, and so on. Chris Sharp and I shared the "live artist" part of the stage (right behind and slightly above the musicians).

In the time allotted I was able to get quite a handle on my painting. I did prepare my piece before though (substrate= 4 cradled Hardbord mounted together) by adhering photo transferred images on the 3' X 4' board. The images were all photos I had taken over the last couple of years and the design was reflective of the body of work I did for the "Slice" show.

This live painting/ music show was called Tacoma in the Round, held at School of the Arts (SOTA) and it was a packed house because David Bazan from Pedro the Lion was the big musical attraction. During the performances our paintings were silently bid on and a fantastic young woman ended up winning the bid. Amazingly enough I wasn't nervous painting in front of all those people. Must be all the "live" painting in front of clients that prepped me for this. Lots of fun to paint while listening to great music!

Wow, what a day so far.

First of all, it is an absolutely gorgeous, sun aglow morning, the kind that you don't take for granted and that we wait all year round for in this mostly gray utopia.

Then, to top it off, I first heard then saw a pod of Orca whale swim by. I counted 5 for sure and am almost sure on a 6th. One had the biggest dorsal fin, twice as high as the other's. I swear it looked about the size of a keel on a 30' sailboat. There is now a slight breeze but at that time of the day the water was calm and not a boat to be seen so their familiar whoosh of expelled air was easily heard. Oh water. One of the many perks of living on the Puget Sound.

These are 2 flat panel slider doors that my client wanted to have more dimension so I painted faux "millwork" to the outer surface. She wanted the look to be clean and simple with a bit of age. The painted "medallions" added some detail and softened the corners.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m attracted to photos most people would throw away; photos that are out of focus, with partial or distorted images, or unnatural eye-popping color.

Using a spontaneously taken photograph as a starting point, this image is photo transferred onto medium, applied to a substrate, then “extended”. Through multiple layers of acrylic glazes the photo’s color and form reach beyond its borders until the initial image is almost undetectable.

My interest in this process began as a study in the precise nature of my decorative painting business, started in 1993. Focusing on murals, faux finishes, and marbleizing, my business also includes the constant challenge of color matching and “fooling the eye” through trompe l’oeil.

Exploring this method of blending an original image into an “extended” version through color and form becomes the basis of this work.

Last November 2008 I collaborating with Daniel Blue of Loyalty Clothing on a couple of jackets. Found these images recently and thought I'd share.

This jacket was already fabulous but the owner wanted something painted on it. Since it was vintage
vinyl and a bit worn in places we thought it best to design and draw the
images over the most delicate areas, hoping it would firm up the fabric.
The image was a combination of both of our marks. Lots of fun especially
since the jacket was so well designed. Love the pleats on the bottom
half so when the wearer moved a bit of black peeked out.

This gray jacket was originally one of those long mens raincoats that come with a zip-in warm fuzzy liner. Daniel skillfully took the material from the bottom half and constructed a hoodie to be attached to the top of the jacket. The "painted" areas were drawings we did on some vinyl upholstery which Daniel sewed into place.

Here's another one where we "painted" on black leather (cut off from a different black leather jacket Daniel had hanging around) from which Daniel designed another sewn on hoodie. The jacket body is corduroy with sewn on extended black leather sleeves to complete the look.

Tacoma artist Mindy Barker recounts that as a teenager living with her family aboard a sailboat on Bellingham Bay, all she wanted for her birthday was a geode. Her birthday wish was fulfilled and when she got her crystal-filled stone orb she would sit and stare at it, fascinated by its colors and its form.

Barker’s fascination with geological forms underlies both the metaphoric and the visual essence of a show of her work currently on display at the Fulcrum Gallery, one of the artistic gemstones of Tacoma’s artistic landscape.

Entitled “Slice,” the show consists of a series of rich paintings as well as an installation utilizing glass as a medium.

Barker’s paintings begin with photographic images that are fixed onto the surface. She then uses paint to extend the bounds of the photograph. In these “photo extensions,” the original photographs are more often than not so well embedded in the painting that it is often difficult to see where the photo ends and the painting begins. Indeed, in a few of the works it takes a trained eye to locate the seed-photo at all.

Earlier examples of Barker’s “photo extensions” had a surreal bent. Those in the current exhibit, however, have a distinctly geological feel. The paintings consist of rocky shapes layered upon one another like the stratified layers of stone and sediment in a cut-away slice of the earth.

Barker’s boulders, stones and pebbly shapes are done in the lush and lavish colors of a mature color palette.

“Red Java,” for example, is a horizontal painting done in exquisite reds– lava and red licorice. The piece is built around photographic images of the graffiti on the booth furniture of the Java Jive Café.

“Rest,” on the other hand, is done in intense greens and blues that are fudged with murky smudges.

Barker also does painting on recycled CDs, making art that is affordable and interchangeable. She calls these paintings “Remixes” and there is a display of them in the current show.

Specifically for the show at Fulcrum, Barker created an installation entitled “Slice.” Gallery owner and glass artist Oliver Doriss encouraged Barker to utilize glass and she rose to the challenge. Using black pigment to outline her organic, geological strata onto the glass, Barker then filled some of the void spaces with translucent, photographic images while leaving others blank. The composition was then sealed with another glass plate held in place with steel hardware. The photo images are random: odd vegetables and anthropomorphic tree trunks, toys floating in a tub, polka-dotted cereal bowls, body parts, and stacks of stones are but a few of the images encountered.

Barker compares these compositions to slices of her own mind, a “landfill” where memories reside in random juxtaposition with each other. The void spaces are places where memories have been lost. Barker also painted the front windows of the gallery in the same technique, thus creating an interactive experience of space that starts at the curb outside the gallery. A viewer peering into the window is unwittingly made a participant in the piece as are gallery visitors who are visible to one another through the heavy panes of glass that are suspended from the ceiling by means of steel cables. If the embedded images are memories, the occupants of the gallery would be mindfulness of the present moment.

Baker’s art seems to perfectly balance the random moment with a consummate skill in the handling of her materials. Her work dazzles the space of the Fulcrum Gallery like the rich-hued crystals inside an especially fortunate geode.

Mindy Barker’s Slice at Fulcrum Gallery is a series of five paintings on glass that hang from the gallery ceiling, two more paintings done directly on the gallery windows, five separate and slightly different paintings in the front gallery, and four smaller paintings and a series of 25 painted compact discs in the small back gallery. Let’s look at them part by part.

But first, let’s look at what they all have in common: photographs and/or pieces of photographs either collaged or photo-transferred onto the surface of the paintings and sandwiched between large rocklike forms. The rock shapes dominate the picture surfaces and are painted with soft value changes, which give them a fully rounded appearance and are often combined with dark, cavelike openings. The photographs are jammed into these openings and often look as if they are in danger of being crushed. In some of her paintings these forms appear to all be on the same plane; in some there is an illusion of depth; and in at least one, Red Java, the rock shapes are bulbous, breastlike forms that appear to advance forward as if visually bursting out of the confines of the canvas. This painting, by the way, is my favorite in the show.

These paintings are inventive and intriguing, begging the question: What is the meaning of these photos of people and objects, and why are they placed within abstract paintings in such strange ways? Barker’s use of illusory space is problematic. In some, the depth and the density are almost overwhelming, creating holes that disrupt the composition. But in most she pushes right up to that precipice without falling in. It’s a dangerous and effective balancing act.

The paintings on glass represent a new direction for Barker, something I’m told she has never done before. They are hung as a group and lighted in such a way that each painting is duplicated in its reflection against the gallery wall; plus, all of the paintings can be seen through one another so that the five hanging glass panels and their reflections and shadows become a single work of art. But that’s not all. The paintings on the window are in the same style, so when looking through the windows from outside they also become part of a unified installation.

Unlike the paintings on canvas, the works on glass have no illusory space. There are amoeba-like cells in flat black acrylic with photographs trapped inside the cells. The overall effect is powerful. And the technical skill with which they are constructed and painted is much in evidence, but when the paintings on glass are viewed individually they are not as effective as are her paintings on canvas. The big difference is that the modulation of tone from dark to light in the works on canvas is much more visually appealing than the flat and brittle black forms in the paintings on glass.

In the Best of Tacoma issue of the Weekly Volcano I chose Fulcrum as the best gallery. Its last show and this one are proving me right. There will be an artist’s talk Sunday, Aug. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Wow, it's been a long time but I've been working diligently on my next show, called "Slice". The opening is August 21st at the Folcrum Gallery, Tacoma, WA. Most of the work consists primarily of sheets of glass, transparent photographs and black paint.

There will also be paintings. Here is a snippet:

A statement about the work:

“Slice”

After observing an exposed, eroding hillside near her painting studio, Mindy imagined the multitudes of memories compressed within each layer of dirt. Like minerals captured within each layer, memories collect in our brains and are compacted together as one aggregated life experience.
The compositions for “Slice” are entombed between sheets of glass, like a brain specimen upon a microscope slide. The random photographs embedded among the painted stratum suggest vivid memories buried in a landfill of forgotten experience.

Uncle Bill

A week ago my Uncle Bill (aka William Donovan, Uncle Bill the lawyer, Dr. Donovan, Donovan, Dad, Wild Bill, Keeper of the Beat) passed away. His death has really done a number on those that loved him...he was such an inspiration. He taught me how to Argentine Tango and recently we were scrapping along trying to learn Spanish. He always cut to chase, helped whenever asked, was the life of a party and always told those around him how much they were loved. I feel compelled to post a few pictures of him...

A random picture taken while I was taking ones for his almost realized Argentine Tango website. He, at one point, was fixing to teach tango in Tacoma with me as his partner. I was honored he asked me.
This was his entry "outfit" for our "Most Ugly Christmas Sweater" contest last Christmas, 2007. You actually can not see the nativity scene that is strapped to his waist in this pic...but it was there! He didn't win (one of his daughters, Cortney, did) all because he had to plug in his lights where as Cortney was free to flit.

A drawing I did about him, called "Will". That is Uncle Bill playing the bass (with a full band) in Drew's "Husband Land" right after we moved into our Gig Harbor beach house.

I miss him much.

The artist reception at the Blackwater Cafe was a blast. So many people showed up...was even hard to get around to everyone and have a chat. Thanks to everyone who joined in the fun and all the well wishes for my birthday! I have the best friends, family, supporters! Also, a special thank you to Rachel, Wes, Carrie, Jan, and Drew for organizing the show and the party that ensued and to Check Please for the tunes.

Come and see. The opening will be Saturday, January 26th, 6-9pm. Should be a great time. "Check Please" will be providing a little melody...their first time in Tacoma. The lineup includes Jesse Quitslund and Drew Schot. Can't wait and hear!

Tomorrow night my opening at Embellish Salon & Gallery will be between 6-8pm. That leaves enough time to catch the new show at the Helm (they go until 10pm)...sounds like a good one. Especially looking forward to seeing what Trevor Dickson is up to. All goodness I bet.

Am so excited for the Sonics... they are playing tonight and Sunday night in Brooklyn. It's sure to be a great show. After 35 yrs! Drew, my mom Jan(an old...and I don't mean oolldd, geesh... buddy of Larry Parypa- yah Larry!), and I were heading to the show this evening but had to change plans. So now we will cheer them on from afar...from Tacoma! Scream and howl boys!!!!

Thanks to all who showed up at the "Waterline" opening at the Crossing Tracks Gallery in San Diego. Loved meeting so many interesting and helpful people. Had a fantastic time "visiting" with artist and friend Kirsten Carlson since we both showed up from little Gig Harbor, WA. Thanks Kirsten! The varied artwork was from as far away as Alaska and as close as San Diego (well... and of course Washington). Thanks so much to Roberto Salas for the invitation into the show (owner and artist).

My next opening will be November 15th at Embellish Salon & Gallery Du Jour in Tacoma, WA. The Painkillers will be the featured music. The lineup includes James Hilborne, Billy Stambaugh, Rick King, and Drew Schot. You'll have to come and see them!
